Before you begin writing your review it is important to establish from the outset that your film review should not be a summary of the plot. As the writer of the review, you must make your opinion of the film clear and you should always ensure that all your views are substantiated and well motivated. [It is acceptable, and in fact quite common, to both praise and criticize a film in the same review.]

The following guidelines will assist you to write a review with finesse as you address the fundamental key elements:

Brief reference and description of the main characters – introduce your reader to the main characters and include a catchy one-liner about each character.

Outline the stars of the film – you may want to refer to any Oscar winning accolades of other noteworthy recognition that the stars may have received. “Star appeal” tends to lend “credibility” to the film.

The Light Factory seeks short films from filmmakers all over the country for the 11th Annual Filmmakers’ Showcase, to be held Friday, May 13 (at 9:30 p.m.) and Saturday, May 14 (8:00 p.m.), at Butter cocktail lounge. The Light Factory Filmmakers’ Showcase highlights the art of short films, created by emerging, established and student filmmakers. Submissions are due Friday, April 15, 2011. The Light Factory is a contemporary museum of photography and film, originally founded as an artist-photographers’ cooperative in 1972. In 1999, The Light Factory added film to its mission and began offering support and exhibition space to screen work from independent filmmakers, as it had for photographers 27 years prior. The Light Factory Filmmakers’ Showcase furthers this mission by exhibiting new work by filmmakers all over the globe, with focus on regional filmmakers from the Carolinas.

The Light Factory considers a short film anything less than 30 minutes in length. The format of short film lends itself to the long-running success of the Annual Filmmakers’ Showcase, which has become one of the most diverse nights of film programming for the entire year. Not only does the Showcase feature two evenings of work by many different artists, but the types of film vary in genre from narrative, to experimental, animation, documentary and beyond.

Shorts are also a more feasible outlet for filmmakers to try new things. “You would be hard-pressed to find a technical or aesthetic innovation that was not first tried in the short form,” says The Light Factory Film Director, Linnea Beyer. “The shorter duration lends itself towards a smaller budget. Less financial risk almost always equates to more artistic freedom which is the focus of the event.”

There is no fee for filmmakers to enter. Films must have been completed after January 1, 2008, and must be submitted no later than Friday, April 15, 2011. All films are viewed and judged by a selection committee, a volunteer group comprised of filmmakers, film enthusiasts, film educators and critics. Awards include Best in Show ($ 100 cash prize), Best Local Film ($ 50 cash prize), Best Narrative Film ($ 50 cash prize), Best Documentary Film ($ 50 cash prize), Best Animation Film ($ 50 cash prize), Best Experimental Film ($ 50 cash prize) and Best Student Film ($ 50 cash prize). The judging is complete, and it is time to vote for the winner of the First Annual Haydenfilms Online Film Festival.

After reviewing over 100 films, an expert panel of judges has selected the top thirty-six films competing for a $ 10,000 cash prize, plus other prizes from sponsors such as Write Brothers and CMP Books. The films will be available for free online member viewing and voting at http://www.haydenfilms.com beginning Aug. 30, continuing through Oct. 30, 2005. The top four filmmakers will have their films shown during the winner’s ceremony in November, and the filmmaker with the most online votes will receive the grand prize.

Finalists for the contest submitted short films no longer than thirty minutes to be reviewed by a unique, professional judging panel consisting of eight national media professors and film industry experts.
