Movie reviews are academic writings that evaluate a particular film. Writing reviews for movies basically begin by providing a summary of the movie in question. The writers should give the plot, the theme of the movie, characters and their contribution to the development of the themes and the setting of the movies. Most people when asked to write movie or film reviews give only these details and claim to have completed their movie review papers. Including only the above details will not make up a movie review but a movie synopsis. Movie reviews go beyond this. They involve providing a critical evaluation of the movie in the writers own point of view. The movie reviews writers should describe the strength and weakness of the movies, the character and the story of the movie.

For one to be a good review paper writer he or she must be a good critic. After conducting movie reviews you should be in a position to advice the readers whether a movie is worth watching or not. When writing movie reviews, the first step involved is watching the movie. You should make sure you are keen through out the movie and that you take notes as you watch. After you have understood the concept of the movie, begin writing your movie reviews by providing a brief summary of the movie. Write about the plot, characters and setting of the movie. Then begin to evaluate the effectiveness of the movie in communicating its themes.

Like any other academic papers movie reviews need to adhere to all the standards of academic writing. Therefore you should ensure that your review paper is written using the correct grammar, spelling and sentences. Friday the 13th Movie Review -Plot

On Friday, June 13, 1980, a young Jason Voorhees (Caleb Guss) witnesses his mother (Nana Visitor) get beheaded by a camp counselor (Stephanie Rhodes) who was trying to escape Mrs. Voorhees’s murderous rampage around Camp Crystal Lake. Approximately thirty-years later, a group of vacationing friends—Wade (Jonathan Sadowski), Richie (Ben Feldman), Mike (Nick Mennell), Whitney (Amanda Righetti), and Amanda (America Olivo)—arrive at Crystal Lake on a camping trip, and to find some weed that was planted in the woods. As Mike and Whitney explore the woods, Jason (Derek Mears) begins to kill the rest of the group one-by-one. Jason also kills Mike, but instead of doing the same to Whitney he decides to kidnap her because she resembles his mother at a young age.

Six weeks later, Trent (Travis Van Winkle), along with his girlfriend Jenna (Danielle Panabaker), and their friends Chewie (Aaron Yoo), Chelsea (Willa Ford), Nolan (Ryan Hansen), Bree (Julianna Guill), and Lawrence (Arlen Escarpeta) arrive at Trent’s summer cabin, which sits on Crystal Lake, unaware of the events that occurred a few weeks prior. Also in town is Clay (Jared Padalecki), who has come to Crystal Lake searching for his sister Whitney. Clay eventually makes his way to Trent’s cabin, where Jenna agrees to help him look for his sister on the other side of the lake. As Clay and Jenna search for clues to Whitney’s disappearance, Jason kills Nolan and Chelsea out on the lake. Clay and Jenna reach the old Crystal Lake campgrounds, where they witness Jason hauling a dead body into one of the abandoned camp houses.

Clay and Jenna run back to warn the others about Jason, who arrives shortly after them and cuts the power to the cabin. After killing Chewie and Lawrence, who ventured outside the house, Jason sneaks inside the cabin and kills Bree. Trent, Clay and Jenna escape the house, but Trent is killed shortly after when he reaches the main road. Jason then chases Clay and Jenna back to the campgrounds, where Clay discovers Jason’s lair and finds his sister chained to the wall. Clay frees Whitney, and all three attempt to escape as Jason arrives. The trio find an exit, but Jenna is killed before she can get out. Jason comes after Clay and Whitney, who use Jason’s love and memory of his mother to distract him long enough to stab him in the chest with his own machete. Afterward, Clay dumps Jason’s lifeless body into the lake, but before he and Whitney can leave Jason bursts through the lake dock and grabs Whitney.

Friday the 13th Movie Review - Casting

Stuntman Derek Mears was hired to portray Jason Voorhees at the recommendation of makeup special effects supervisor Scott Stoddard. Mears’s pleasant demeanor had the studio worried about his ability to portray such a menacing character on screen, but Mears assured them that he was up to the role. Jared Padalecki signed on as the lead male who investigates what happened at Crystal Lake, with Amanda Righetti taking the female lead. Amanda Righetti had not read the script when she was initially offered the role. Wanting to be a part of the Friday the 13th franchise from the start, Righetti admitted that she was sold on the idea of acting in the film after she did read the script. Danielle Panabaker, Jonathan Sadowski, Travis Van Winkle, Aaron Yoo, Julianna Guill round out the rest of the cast. Nana Visitor was cast as Pamela Voorhees, with Caleb Guss hired for the role of a young Jason.

The casting process was difficult for producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form on this film, more so than it was on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as Friday the 13th had more young actors to contend with and consistent casting/recasting all the way until filming began. Fuller and Form’s first challenge was the size of their cast. Fuller and Form had thirteen young actors in Friday the 13th, whereas in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre they only had five. The pair had to continually recast parts to find the group that worked best together. This recasting process extended all the way to the start of film. Richard Burgi, who was cast as the sheriff, did not sign on until twelve hours before he had to start filming his scenes.

Ravan is a drastic disaster. The most awaited indian movie of yhe last three years from most talented movie maker of india disappointed everyone.Expecially the hindi version. The tamil version is watchable, more precisely a must watch one.

The impatient wait to see Mani Ratnam’s ‘Raavan’ has ended, in its place I feel a terrible sense of disappointment. The visual epic we had longed to see onscreen is beautiful to watch, of course. But it lacks a soul. The promotional interviews which had the actors praising each other look so fake and naive now. For, most of the actors, with the exception of Priyamani, Ravi Kissen and Govinda, fail to make an impact on the viewer. Including Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai.

As everybody knows, the storyline of the film has been inspired by epic ‘Ramayan’. Beera Munda (Abhishek), a dacoit who lives in the jungles, abducts Raagini (Aishwarya), wife of Police Superintendent Dev (Vikram). And it was obvious that Mani Ratnam wanted to tell the story from the perspective of the anti-hero, as the title suggests. If Raavan in the epic is a ten-headed titan, Beera is a schizophrenic modern Robin Hood, who plans to wreak revenge on Dev for the cruelties the latter had inflicted on his sister (Priyamani). However, after sitting through the movie that spans about two hours and ten minutes, one feels short-changed for many reasons. The story isn’t gripping, the songs are largely mundane, and the treatment is largely on expected lines though the actors do try to pull up the mundane to the next level with some show of spunk.

courtsy:www.filmydum.com

There are mainly two reason for its failure:

1)Soulless script.

2)Abhishek Bachan.

FILM REVIEWS

Critics and their reviews pervade many industries and are supposed to be particularly important in the entertainment industry. However, are the critics really the know-all and be – all of cinema? Do these critics play favorites? Is there a lobby? Does money play a part?

I may not be able to answer all the questions posed  above here in my article, at least not today but want to share a few thoughts about the much valued film reviews and the critics who write them.

Largely I abstain from writing on films and the film industry but today morning as I read the review of “JAIL” in the Mumbai mirror, I felt it to be biased against it, as my eyes scanned the page they rested on the picture of the critic who wrote the review. My mind started to sluggishly work and I remembered seeing him in  Bhandarkar Entertainments office trying to meet up with Madhur Bhandarkar. . He was trying to pitch some script of his to the celebrated maker of reality based films.

Yes, this critic is Minty Tejpal , the writer of “BLUE UMBRELLA” a film which except the censors nobody saw.

Critic Minty Tejpal does rightly point out some drawbacks of the film but he is totally off the mark when he says that Madhur Bhandarkar take on reality has turned in to a formula. Madhur may have made a mistake in choosing not the best of scripts in his latest hard-hitting film “JAIL” but in spite of that, he has the viewers glued to their seats only on the basis of his own innovative style of direction. The real fact is that some critic’s style of writing reviews has become like the ‘hallmark greeting card’, which feigns superiority.

Mel Brooks once likened film critics to ‘eunuchs at an orgy’

A critic can look as long as he likes, but cannot participate. A critic can deconstruct all the seventy odd scenes of a film but cannot create any thing worthwhile himself even if given a chance to. A not so recent journalist turned film director – turned editor … yet again trying to turn film director, is the best example of vaccum-filled brains trying to impose his flawed thoughts on to the gullible cinema loving Indians in the form of a film.

I can only advise cinema lovers to avoid reading any professional film reviews; people could feel intimidated by critics, which may churn their minds in to a conflict situation. Some movie goers who read a four or five star rated review of a film may come away confused as to what the hype was all about. ‘KAMINEY’ had got four and five star ratings, all the critics were raving about it but the movie goers who saw the film could not even understand what the story was all about.

Critics are not the end-all and be-all of cinematic opinion, they also may have an axe to grind, just like our corrupt politicians, police, babus etc. they are strange men in strange jobs.

But just passing comments on others creativity is not a job, critics need to have work of their own to be judged before they can be allowed to start dissecting the work of others. If others start scrutinizing them, their own lives could turn in to a can of worms.

Coming back to ‘JAIL’ and its director, let us not forget that Madhur Bhandarkar very first film had flopped miserably, nevertheless he rose from the ashes to be the only director in India to be awarded the most coveted National Award three times. I distinctly remember a few critics had given Bhandarkar’s films like Corporate, Page 3, Traffic Signal and Chandni Bar , one and one and a half stars, yet these films went on to become the biggest grosser at the box office. Talking about ‘Chandni Bar’ I don’t think any film could come near it in terms of content and execution in the last seven years since it was released. Today the name ‘Madhur Bhandarkar’ guarantees a decent initial to his film, which most so-called stars just dream of and not all other directors can even dream of it.

It goes without asking that whenever Mr. Bhandarkar makes his next film the masses and the classes will be eagerly awaiting it, in this lies the curiosity, the charisma, the magic of Madhur Bhandarkar. A game, which the almighty God has set, and no critic can change.

It goes without asking that whenever Mr. Bhandarkar makes his next film the masses and the classes will be eagerly awaiting it, in this lies the curiosity, the charisma, the magic of Madhur Bhandarkar. A game, which the almighty God has set, and no critic can change.
