My name is Jon Young and I am an amateur film maker.  I have produced 6 feature low budget indiefilms and directed one feature.  Unfortunately I spend most of my time in the writing phase.  I saw unfortunately because not all my scripts have been filmed.  The screen writing  is really fun but the goal is to end up with a feature film.  There are a lot of reasons why a script doesn’t get filmed.

The most common reason a script doesn’t get made is because it is just not good.  They say you really need to write 3 scripts before you have something good enough to film. I have worked with a ton of partners over the years and a lot of times the ideas seem good when we are working on them  but when assembled into a finished project they just don’t work.  Sometimes our ideas seem kind of bland but as the bigger whole they work, you just never know until your finished.  On the feature I actually filmed, after I finished editing the rough cut of the film I realized what we did wrong when we wrote the script.  The best thing I can say is do a lot of rewrites and do as many rewrites as you can stomach in the treatment phase.  Once your done get as many people as you can to read it and give you feedback.

Today I meet with one of my two new writing partners. He came up with a bunch of really good ideas since our last meeting.  And as we went through them I explained to him that our story isn’t low budget anymore.  The ideas are actually really good.  They remind me a little too much of the matrix but it worked for our concept.  The problem is that there is no way I could film the script without a bunch of money. Our original goal was to write something that we could do all on green screen.  My idea was to set the story on a space station.  Anyway it has evolved into a monster of a project with guns, chase scenes and numerous locations.  He even added a dog.  I assume next week he will insert a child as one of the characters and basically we are hitting on all the no no’s for a small budget.

It was a struggle today also because I wanted to go through the 4 page treatment he emailed me last night and he wanted to talk about movies and other fun things.  I know he already knew what was on the four pages but I wanted to go through them with him.  I wanted to give him feedback. Also I wanted to insert my ideas into the story and see what he thought about them.  He put together a pretty interesting first half of the story with lots of conflict, tension and mystery.  Three important elements for a good story.  We ended the meeting with a debate about how interesting it would be to set the movie in the 70′s.  He told me that’s so unique. My thought was sure and the matrix stuff was also unique.  I told him to start going to goodwill and find out fits and props now and I’ll cast actors that can fit into them.  Then I counted the number of characters we have in the 70′s stuff and I came up with 15.  This is in the first half of the movie before you realize we are on a space station.  So add up the characters on the space station and we are well over the ideal number of actors for a small budget film.   Oh and retro sets are another no no for small budgets because you have hair styles, clothes and props.

So my debate tonight is how do I deal with this issue.  I like the story.  It’s not what I originally envisioned but it’s actually kind of an interesting story.  Can I convince this guy that we should write the story and then try to sell it?  I would be happy to sell it to one of the studios for six figures.  I know the reality is that it would be like winning the lottery.  The original goal was to write something small budget that was festival worthy and submit it to the Sundance Film Festival.  Honestly this is a commercial story that probably wouldn’t play so well at the film festivals. It’s a story that probably also requires a star or two to get it to work.
My personal goal is to get a film in to sundance.  That’s on my to do list in my life time.  I’m going to look for another writer to start a different story.  Something that can be filmed on a small budget for the film festival circuit. Maybe I will continue with this guy and finish the story for Hollywood. The moral of this story is to stay away from concepts like sci-fi, space stations or anything that could end up being big budget if you want a story to film yourself.

We all enjoy watching films and we have all given a review of a film – in most cases informally between a group of friends, as we recommend a film or dissuade someone from going to see the film.

A formal film review however, requires more structure and some important guidelines need to be adhered to in order to formulate an effective film review.

Before you begin writing your review it is important to establish from the outset that your film review should not be a summary of the plot. As the writer of the review, you must make your opinion of the film clear and you should always ensure that all your views are substantiated and well motivated. [It is acceptable, and in fact quite common, to both praise and criticize a film in the same review.]

The following guidelines will assist you to write a review with finesse as you address the fundamental key elements:

Brief reference and description of the main characters – introduce your reader to the main characters and include a catchy one-liner about each character.

Outline the stars of the film – you may want to refer to any Oscar winning accolades of other noteworthy recognition that the stars may have received. “Star appeal” tends to lend “credibility” to the film.

Discuss the genre of the film – identify the main genres that are evident throughout the film. Most films are a combination of a few genres. [fantasy, romance, thriller, sci-fi, historical epic, horror, docudrama or a adventure]

Entertainment value or money ill spent – your film review should include your opinion on the entertainment and enjoyment value of the film, or conversely your views if you feel that the film was not enjoyable. [you may want to include comments here on the emotions and feelings that the film evoked]

Comment on the acting – formulate an opinion on the acting portrayed, whether t was realistic and effective as it relates to the genre and purpose of the film.

Costumes, special effects and computer graphics – comments on exceptional costume or set design and any notable special effects and computer graphics. Remember to include your views as to whether they enhance the film or detract from the film.

Mission accomplished -  the directors envisioned a purpose that they hoped to portray to the viewers. Did they aim to educate, entertain or inform the audience [or a combination of the fore mentioned]. Consider whether the film achieved what it set out to do and comment accordingly.

Age restriction and rating – suggest a suitable age restriction and comment if relevant on any gratuitous violence, bad language or promiscuity.

Film review in a nutshell – comment forthrightly on the fundamentals of the film. Say it “write”…avoid fawning and flattery and frame your content to incorporate the structures outlined above.

FILM REVIEWS

Critics and their reviews pervade many industries and are supposed to be particularly important in the entertainment industry. However, are the critics really the know-all and be – all of cinema? Do these critics play favorites? Is there a lobby? Does money play a part?

I may not be able to answer all the questions posed  above here in my article, at least not today but want to share a few thoughts about the much valued film reviews and the critics who write them.

Largely I abstain from writing on films and the film industry but today morning as I read the review of “JAIL” in the Mumbai mirror, I felt it to be biased against it, as my eyes scanned the page they rested on the picture of the critic who wrote the review. My mind started to sluggishly work and I remembered seeing him in  Bhandarkar Entertainments office trying to meet up with Madhur Bhandarkar. . He was trying to pitch some script of his to the celebrated maker of reality based films.

Yes, this critic is Minty Tejpal , the writer of “BLUE UMBRELLA” a film which except the censors nobody saw.

Critic Minty Tejpal does rightly point out some drawbacks of the film but he is totally off the mark when he says that Madhur Bhandarkar take on reality has turned in to a formula. Madhur may have made a mistake in choosing not the best of scripts in his latest hard-hitting film “JAIL” but in spite of that, he has the viewers glued to their seats only on the basis of his own innovative style of direction. The real fact is that some critic’s style of writing reviews has become like the ‘hallmark greeting card’, which feigns superiority.

Mel Brooks once likened film critics to ‘eunuchs at an orgy’

A critic can look as long as he likes, but cannot participate. A critic can deconstruct all the seventy odd scenes of a film but cannot create any thing worthwhile himself even if given a chance to. A not so recent journalist turned film director – turned editor … yet again trying to turn film director, is the best example of vaccum-filled brains trying to impose his flawed thoughts on to the gullible cinema loving Indians in the form of a film.

I can only advise cinema lovers to avoid reading any professional film reviews; people could feel intimidated by critics, which may churn their minds in to a conflict situation. Some movie goers who read a four or five star rated review of a film may come away confused as to what the hype was all about. ‘KAMINEY’ had got four and five star ratings, all the critics were raving about it but the movie goers who saw the film could not even understand what the story was all about.

Critics are not the end-all and be-all of cinematic opinion, they also may have an axe to grind, just like our corrupt politicians, police, babus etc. they are strange men in strange jobs.

But just passing comments on others creativity is not a job, critics need to have work of their own to be judged before they can be allowed to start dissecting the work of others. If others start scrutinizing them, their own lives could turn in to a can of worms.

Coming back to ‘JAIL’ and its director, let us not forget that Madhur Bhandarkar very first film had flopped miserably, nevertheless he rose from the ashes to be the only director in India to be awarded the most coveted National Award three times. I distinctly remember a few critics had given Bhandarkar’s films like Corporate, Page 3, Traffic Signal and Chandni Bar , one and one and a half stars, yet these films went on to become the biggest grosser at the box office. Talking about ‘Chandni Bar’ I don’t think any film could come near it in terms of content and execution in the last seven years since it was released. Today the name ‘Madhur Bhandarkar’ guarantees a decent initial to his film, which most so-called stars just dream of and not all other directors can even dream of it.

It goes without asking that whenever Mr. Bhandarkar makes his next film the masses and the classes will be eagerly awaiting it, in this lies the curiosity, the charisma, the magic of Madhur Bhandarkar. A game, which the almighty God has set, and no critic can change.
